Current Warhammer 40k Bestsellers Entering 2018
Periodically, I like to check in Games Workshop’s website to see what are the hottest models, and for the last few months I been checking the bestsellers list. The list turns out to be a pretty strange, but static list of products. Assume the list represents gross totals, not units sold, also don’t assume that the list is in any actually order.
- Mortarion
- Imperial Knight Warden
- Dark Imperium
- Blight Lord Terminators
- Plagueburst Crawler
- Baneblade
- Deathshroud Bodyguards
- Talons of the Emperor
- Deathguard Dice
- The Horus Heresy: Burning of Prospero
There you have it, the nine Bestselling Warhammer 40k kits to start 2018
To say the Death Guard is dominating sales is an understatement, to the point Games Workshop cannot keep some kits in stock. They are fantastic models and shows clearly that Games Workshop should invest in completing the other Chaos Space Marine Legions. What stands out the most though is no Primaris Marines kits making the list. There could be many reasons for this: the Dark Imperium Box provides the most Primaris units players need, maybe Primaris units are not that good in game causing sales to lag. The more problematic possibility is hobbyists just don’t really like the models or what they represent for the future of Space Marines. We are talking about Space Marines here, the main Games Workshop line and you have no models in the Top 9 should be concerning.
Another concern is no Xenos units, just as recently as 2016 you had a good balance Genestealer Cult units and new Tau units dominating the list, with some legacy Imperial units rounding out the rest. It also shows when you focus on Space Marine and Chaos Space Marine armies you don’t sell very many Start Collecting sets, as most players have no incentive to invest in a army outside the most popular lines.
The biggest oddity in the list though has to be the Death Guard dice, of all the cool new faction dice they have cheapestly made, unpractical Games Workshop has ever made.
Here is a break down of list into tangible parts.
- Death Guard (5)
- Space Marines (1)
- Imperial Guard (1)
- Box Sets (3)
- Accessorizes (1)
Other interesting notes…
- Three are Single models kits.
- Three are Box Sets.
- No Terrain or Finecast.
- Six are Deathguard or have Deathguard included
- Only the Baneblade is a kit or set over 2 years old.
- Only The Horus Heresy: Burning of Prospero has stayed on the list for over a year.
- No Xenos make the list
- No Start Collecting boxes.
- Four units are currently out of stock
It will be interesting to see how the list looks like in a few months, as February is a Age of Sigmar and March is looking to have limited 40k releases beyond a few Xenos Characters and maybe that new Imperial Knight. Though I expect the Great Unclean One and at least one Adeptus Custodes unit to make the list very shorty, that is if Game Workshop keeps on updating the list.
