Warhammer Community Sneak Peeks
Raise a flagon of mjød to the glory of the Allfather, as today we’re showcasing some of the supplementary rules for the Space Wolves featured in Saga of the Beast! Sharpen your axes, battle-brothers and sisters, as we’re about to dial the heroism up to 11. Awwwoooo!
Ragnar Blackmane
After awakening from the Red Sleep* following his fateful duel with Ghazghkull Thraka, Ragnar found that the Wolf Priests had borne him across the Rubicon Primaris in order to preserve his life.
On the plus side, Ragnar is now more powerful than ever – check out his devastating new profile…
Yes, that’s right. 7 Attacks! But there’s more. Ragnar’s berserk rampages are legendary – as his slaughter of the Ork Warboss Borzag Khan and his entire Nobz bodyguard can attest. So much so, in fact, that the standard Shock Assault ability doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to the Allslayer…
With a potential 10 Attacks at Damage 2 (courtesy of his legendary blade, Frostfang), it’s fair to say that Ragnar won’t have any problems being bogged down in combat. What’s more, the Young King’s infectious Battlelust ensures that he and his warriors stay on the front foot, enabling you to keep the pressure on your opponent as you chew through their battleline.
Whether he’s up against a horde of enemies or duelling a powerful foe in combat, there’s not much that will stand up to the sheer ferocity of Ragnar Blackmane!
Combat Doctrines
The answer to the question on everyone’s lips is yes, the Space Wolves do indeed gain the Combat Doctrines utilised by other Chapters.** This method of fighting is as instinctive to the way that Space Marines wage war as Bolter Discipline and Shock Assault, regardless of the Chapter from which they hail. With that being said, the Space Wolves certainly have their favourite – and no prizes for guessing that it’s the Assault Doctrine that they specialise in!
When combined with an extra Attack from Shock Assault and a bonus of +1 to hit in the first round of combat thanks to their Hunters Unleashed ability, the Space Wolves certainly won’t be taking any prisoners in the Fight phase!
Stratagems
The sons of Russ will also be able to make use of a whopping 24 additional Stratagems! Some of these Stratagems, such as Duty Eternal (making your Dreadnoughts super-tough) and Veteran Intercessors (for +1 Attack), will already be familiar to many, but there are some powerful new additions that are unique to the Space Wolves. For example, check out Knowledge of the Foe, which offers a handy – if rather gruesome – way of replenishing your Command Points.
If you’re looking to give one of your Characters a boost in melee, try activating Touch of the Wild for the opportunity to generate extra Attacks. When combined with Savage Fury (not to mention Ragnar’s potential 10 Attacks!), 1 Command Point can turn your Character of choice into a warrior to rival Russ himself!
That’s some serious hitting power right there. Now for some shouting power…
Litanies of Battle
More good news – the Space Wolves are about to receive Litanies of Battle too! After all, there are few more inspiring sights to the sons of Russ than a Wolf Priest bellowing forth mighty oaths of war and tales of inspirational deeds as they unleash the murder make. In addition to the six standard Litanies of Battle, there is one unique to the Space Wolves that can inspire nearby warriors to bring down even the largest prey in short order.
The Space Wolves have always been renowned for their oral traditions, but now you can make them count!
Relics of the Fang
Saga of the Beast also includes a number of new Relics of the Fang available to the Characters of the Space Wolves. If you want to double down on the Litany of Battle shown above, accompanying your Wolf Priest with a Character wielding Wrymsplitter will make for a brutally powerful combination against both Monsters and Vehicles.
If you like the idea of getting stuck into the enemy with your Rune Priest – or favour using the Concealed Position ability of a Primaris Rune Priest in Phobos Armour to set up right in your opponent’s face – consider giving them the Talisman of Storms. With the right positioning, your Rune Priest can cause loads of damage and disruption.
And that’s just a selection of SOME of the rules the Space Wolves will be picking up in Saga of the Beast. You’ll also be able to read loads of exciting new lore as the sons of Russ hurl themselves into the events of the Psychic Awakening with fangs bared. Cool, huh? So cool, in fact, it’s full-on helfrost!
Da new Psychic Awakening book, Saga of the Beast, adds even more toyz fer da Boyz. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the new Stratagems, Kustom Jobs, psychic powers and specialist mobs in the book. All together now – Waaagh!
Ghazghkull Thraka
We’ve already seen the real mastermind behind the Ork renaissance, now let’s have a look at his best buddy.
Ghazghkull is back and he’s bigger and badder than before. He’s still da Prophet of Gork and Mork but, after going under the knife of Mad Dok Grotsnik, he’s now even ’arder!
As well as getting a physical upgrade, da Meks have been working on Ghazghkull’s weapons too. He now has an even shootier shoota (called Mork’s roar) and an even krumpier klaw (called Gork’s klaw).
As da biggest boss, Ghazghkull can forcefully take charge of an Ork army from any Clan, and his Great Waaagh! ability still works on all Orks.
Of course, Ghazghkull is still a Goff at heart, and he gets even more benefits in a Goff army. But whatever army you take him in, he’s going to break some ’eads.
Clan Psychic Powers
This being the Psychic Awakening, each of the six Ork Clans (and the Freebooterz) all get a new psychic power, which can be selected instead of generating one from the Waaagh! discipline. The Blood Axes get Clever Talk, which allows you to be dead kunnin’ before you get dead brutal.
With all of that Waaagh! energy flying around, your Weirdboyz are about to get even weirder.
Specialist Mobs
Sometimes Orks throw off the constraints of their Clan and instead group together with other like-minded greenskins. Saga of the Beast lets you do this, giving you a totally new way of building a fun and flavourful Ork army. You even get to benefit from a unique Subkulture related to the Specialist Mob you choose! If you like burnin’ stuff, choose the Pyromaniacs specialist mob and get the Arsonists Subkultur.
This is a great way for your Boomboyz, Feral Orks, Madboyz and more to gang up together and break some heads.
Kustom Jobs
Ork Meks never stop messin’ with their creations – they’re always tinkerin’ and experimentin’ – but when it works, the results can be spectorkular! Saga of the Beast lets you take one of these Kustom Jobs for free if you have a Mekboy Workshop in your army. Need your Killa Kans, Deff Dreads, Morkanauts and Gorkanauts to get into combat faster? Get them booked in to be fitted with Orkymatic Pistons.
If you’ve not got a Mekboy Workshop, you can still choose a Kustom Job through the use of a Stratagem. So, everybody can have a Souped-up Speshul, some Nitro-powered Squigs or a Forktress.
Stratagems
Orks don’t usually bother with things like ‘taktiks’ or ‘stratergee’, they leave that boring stuff to other races, like da ’umies. That’s not to say that they don’t have a few tricks up their sleeves* on the battlefield. Want to make your Burna Boyz and Lootas more reliable? Then bring in a Klever Spanner.
Or maybe your Flyboyz are jealous of their mates having all the fun on the ground and just want to join in.**
That means that every unit within 6” suffers D3 mortal wounds! And what Ork player hasn’t dreamt of having the ability to deliberately crash their planes into the enemy?
In the 41st Millennium, the only constant is change and, if the Tyranids have taught us anything, you need to evolve to survive. This is true even for the biggest heroes, and today we’re taking a look at how the models for Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka have transformed over the years.
Ragnar Blackmane
Ragnar Blackmane first made his debut way back in the dim and distant days of Rogue Trader (that was the first edition of Warhammer 40,000). Designed by the legendary Jes Goodwin,* the model was absolutely packed with intricate details.
Wait a minute… Topknot? Carrying a chainsword? Clearly there were some design pointers from this even older Space Wolves model.
Yes, that’s the original Leman Russ!** Back then, Primarchs weren’t quite the massive demigods of war they’ve since become.
Modern design techniques have enabled the studio to create a new model that’s full of dynamism. However, it also incorporates a number of nods back to the original, from the combat claws in the boots to the Belt of Russ, and even the diamond-shaped gem mounted on the backpack.
Ghazghkull Thraka
Ghazghkull first appeared even further back, in White Dwarf issue 134. His background of having an adamantium skull was already in place, but his first model was a conversion by the ‘Eavy Metal team.
His first official model then arrived some six months before Ragnar’s, alongside that of his first nemesis, Commissar Yarrick. Back then, he wore power armour and had a special rule that gave him a Battlewagon to ride around in for no additional points – those were the days! He also came with his own personal banner bearer.
When we next saw a new Ghazghkull, he’d undergone a massive change. Given a hulking suit of mega armour, he became a much more imposing sight on the battlefield. His kustom kombi-weapon had been replaced with a big shoota and he’d exchanged his power sword for an evil-looking claw.
As with Ragnar, there are a number of features shared by this model and the new one, including the Goff horns extruding from the armour and the massive skull on top. While the new model is bigger, it’s still easily identifiable as Ghazghkull Thraka.
Now that you’re floating on a sweet nostalgia high, let’s hear all about the new models from the team that designed them.
The new Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka models will face off in the Prophecy of the Wolf battlebox, which is available to pre-order from Saturday. In the meantime, grab Ghazghkull a Battlewagon for old time’s sake.
The next chapter in Warhammer 40,000’s Psychic Awakening is nearly upon us, not to mention some great new reads!
The Cicatrix Maledictum has torn through the galaxy, emboldening the greenskin menace across the galaxy. This coming week, pre-orders will go live for Saga of the Beast, which features both Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka!
Watch this video to see what’s coming up at a glance, then read on for more details!
It’s a test of cunning, rage and brutality on both sides! The savage Space Wolves go toe to toe with the largest Ork Waaagh! seen for thousands of years. The Prophecy of the Wolf battlebox promises a truly epic clash between Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka – both are back in action and stronger than ever before!
This weighty box contains everything you need to stage your own slugfest throwdowns between Ragnar’s Space Wolves and Ghazghkull’s Great Waaagh!, including a book packed with gripping stories and missions to play. Not only do you get two forces – Space Marines and Orks – but this is currently the only way to get the astonishing updated models of two beloved characters of the 41st Millennium.
Ragnar has crossed the Rubicon Primaris, and he’s ready to lead the pack to hunt! Even in his new armour, he’s instantly recognisable, and his aggressive pose perfectly captures the indomitable spirit of the Space Wolves. If you’re looking to bolster a Space Wolves army (or start a new one), this updated classic is the perfect choice to command them.
Not to be outdone, Ghazghkull has undergone something of a transformation himself, truly earning his nickname – “The Beast”. Every self-respecting Ork Waaagh! will want the prophet of Gork and Mork driving them to further acts of wanton destruction. Painters all around the world could be heard uttering an audible gasp upon seeing this remarkable model for the first time.
And let’s not forget about Makari, his lucky standard bearer, who makes a triumphant (if somewhat dubious) return with his own new model.
Don’t call him a sidekick – Makari has amassed a cult following of his own. Stronger than ever, he’s returned after putting paid to the nasty rumour of his untimely end. He brings with him his signature 2+ invulnerable save and infamous luck which makes Ghazghkull and nearby Goff Orks even harder to shift. On top of that, nearby Goff Gretchin are inspired by his very presence – he’s a real hero of the people.
As great as Ragnar and Ghazghkull (and Makari) are, there’s much more to love about this battlebox. You’ll get 10 Primaris Space Marines that can be built as Infiltrators or Incursors, five Ork Nobz and three Ork Meganobz, not to mention an Ammo Runt and a Grot Oiler. Prophecy of the Wolf also includes a 32-page book chock full of art, background material and rules to recreate the culmination of this bloody campaign for yourself.
While the battlebox focuses on the knock-down-drag-out combat at the centre of the war, Psychic Awakening: Saga of the Beast dives deep into the core of the Space Wolves and the Orks. You’ll find more missions, plus updated rules and loads of new options for both sides.
Available in both hardback and digital editions, this 80-page book describes the greenskin unification known as the Great Waaagh! alongside the prophecies and visions of the Rune Priests that informed Ragnar’s vow to end it.
This book is essential for collectors of both Space Wolves and Orks – you’ll find new Stratagems, updated and expanded datasheets, Relics, psychic powers and even rules for giving your Ork vehicles Kustom Jobs and creating Specialist Mobs.
We’ll have a lot more to say about this throughout the week, so check back to get the full scoop.
If you’re a dedicated Son of Russ or devotee of Gork (or maybe Mork) you’ll want to get the collector’s edition of Saga of the Beast while you can.
This stunning tome features black page edges, a black ribbon bookmark and a soft-touch finish with debossed details and full artwork on the front and back. Not only do you get all the rules, art and background from the standard book, but this edition also includes extra material from the Prophecy of the Wolf campaign book, plus four short stories originally published right here on the Warhammer Community site.
