Often at Blood of Kittens we tend to avoid doing things that everyone else is doing, but being that this is the first CGI realized 40k movie I suppose we should talk about it.
Was it terrabad? Not really
It was about what I expected somewhere between Glen or Glenda and The Road (the movie that is). What the Ultramarine movie did well was in the set design department (when fog wasn’t covering it), the soundtrack, and the voice acting. So what about the other stuff… well instead of going into a synopsis or spoilers how about we try a stream of consciousness (It helps if you have seen the movie, but not required)
Did you groan of yell at the screen when you found out that the Ultramarines were the greatest of all chapters?
Start with the Ralph Bakshi’s intro to Lord of the Rings is a good call.
If their was an Oscar for smoke machines this movie would get it.
Battle Barges and Thunderhawks only carry one Speeder and 12 Marines. No I didn’t forget about you too servitor.
Can we say budget constraints?
Look! Dad that one has a flat mohawk that makes him different from the others. Why do most of these guys look like desiccated corpses anyway?
For a movie that is almost all about the walking you think the animators would have focused a bit more time on walking.
Oh God, if he asks one more time about how to detect taint I am going to take that banner and impale him on his taint! Which reminds me… Try these shooters (shots will not get you drunk fast enough) when you play either Shall know no Fear or Taint drinking game. Shall know no Fear: Absolut Citron Vodka, Blue Curacao, Malibu Rum, Midori, Orange Juice, Sour Mix Taint: Amaretto, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Coca Cola, Jagermeister, Root Beer Schnapps
One Rhino could have made this 76 minute movie into 40 minutes.
Showing animated bullet time action is so….

How much cooler some scenes would have been with Super Mario audio files?
Ultramarine Apothecaries actually don’t give your squad FNP instead they either dispense Captain Obvious medical diagnosis or whine about wanting to go back to the ship. They are also keepers of the sacred Apothcary flashlight and have borderline unhealthy obsession with extracting Gene Seed.
That is not a Thunder Hammer it is a Warhammer really no it is just a Warhammer! Get it… Warhammer 40,000
Ultramarine Bolters and Flamers were AP 3 for the filming of this movie.
Land Speeders are still AV10
Chainswords own pretty much everything.
If their ends up being a successor chapter from this group of Ultramarines I suggest somehow a stairmaster be incorporated into their banner.
That one big fire animation I couldn’t stop being reminded about…

Really? Rosariuses are also microwave emitters that need to charge up. No really they are.
It is really hard to sneak up on a Demon Prince carrying a Chapter Banner or should I say taint detector!
In the 41st millennium 5 minutes Galactic space-time is actually 10-15 minutes our time.
and I am spent.
Is this movie worth watching I say yes, because it is all we got and it. Is it worth buying? GW gets enough of my money already thank you very much. The major problem for many people is the Dawn of War intro movies really raise the bar unfairly for anything GW puts out and in the end it actually might have been better to do old fashion animation and put the money saved into story and plot.
I also wanted to get some opinions from other people on the movie so I asked a few of my friends to help me by giving their two cents.

Talking to my friends it really did make me wonder who was really the target audience? Anyway what do you think?
