Here is another in what I hope will be a continuing series of pimping work for others around the net. One of Blood of Kittens readers Jono Strangleweb has an event to promote in good old Britain. The event sounds super cool for those that like their Warhammer not so competitive, but super fun. So read and take a look at the links for more information

At Warhammer World at GWHQ, there’s a campaign weekend in a couple of weeks time run by a UK club called the ‘Tempus Fugitives“, not a tournament, a campaign weekend. The difference? Well, here’s a few extracts from the introduction in the latest campaign pack…

“IMPORTANT!

THIS IS NOT A TOURNAMENT. YOU WILL GET MORE OUT OF THE WEEKEND IF YOU ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN FOCUS ON THE OUTCOME OF YOUR GAMES. TRY AND PLAY WITH YOUR OPPONENT RATHER THAN AGAINST THEM!”

“Once again (all together now) it is important to remember that the campaign weekend is not a tournament. If you are expecting anything other than to just have fun – turn back now!”

“In fact the story is almost as important as the actual games themselves and players should be prepared to get into the mindset of the army they have brought to battle with.”

“Your armies may meet annihilation in the face of an enemy with vastly superior numbers or power, but trying to hold the line in the face of such odds is what legends are all about.”

“Most importantly remember that, as this is a team event, even if you lose your individual battle your task force or faction may still do well overall; don’t worry about ‘winning’, just think about having a good time.”

That’s a lot of emphasis on not winning! I first read one of these introductions around 4 years ago, when I was invited to a TF event, I was of the opinion that it was all a bit soft, and that I’d roll up with my Raven Guard and stomp everyone into submission. Anyway, after a couple of games in my favour, I had a match up against Necrons, was outnumbered 3000pts – 4000pts, he had a pylon too, but I almost beat him (he was 2 Necrons away from phasing).
This was my epiphany. I thoroughly enjoyed almost winning. It was so exciting battling against the odds, and against some really nice guys (in fact the Necrons in that game were commanded by GW’s own Kev Beadle). I have not missed a single one of the 40K events run by the TF guys since. This is a stark contrast to my dwindling enthusiasm towards the GTs, where I keep playing the same missions against the same armies time and time again!
The next event, running on the 11/12 September is entitled ‘The Age of the Emperor: The Great Scouring’ and is the final event in a set of four linked campaign weekends based around the Horus Heresy. The first three have taken us from the Great Crusade, through the Horus Heresy itself, including the Istvaan massacre, and the Siege of Terra.
With the Emperor plugged into the Golden Throne, and the Imperium in ruins, the surviving loyalist primarchs are hounding the traitors back towards the Eye of Terror and the Maelstrom. Of course it’s not that simple, and the Orks, Eldar and a small contingent of Necron-type constructs are getting in on the action too.
With custom rules (including Primarchs), inclusion of Imperial Armour materials, redefined army lists and mission restrictions, varying point values and a bit of doubles play too, these events offer something a little different from the ‘norm’. Don’t get me wrong, I still play to win, but I’m never disappointed if I lose in an otherwise fantastically spirited and fun game.
There’s still a few tickets left for The Great Scouring, so if you are in the UK and fancy re-enacting the events of the 31st Millennium, why not have a look at it? You can find more information at the Tempus Fugitives website and links to the campaign packs are in the forum (not the downloads section). Hopefully I will see you there!
